COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The Kiwanis Club of Coldwater has kicked off new a new literacy initiative at the Coldwater Maytag Coin Laundry.
The service project will provide a designated reading area for children that includes a bookrack, books, reading mat and seating area while they are with parents at the laundromat. The new program is part of a continuing effort by the Kiwanis Club to give access to books, so that children can read, or be read to, whenever possible.
The BUBBLES & BOOKS project was selected based on community need. According to the Kiwanis Club, nationally there are programs in place that have shown success in providing resources in many non-traditional venues. By working together, BUBBLES & BOOKS is designed to provide books for children of all ages, in a location where parents and children are typically together.
Community support includes used books donated from the Branch District Library and The Great Start Collaborative, as well as books provided by the Kiwanis Club of Coldwater.
“We have opportunities for someone to volunteer once a week, once a month, once a year or anything in between,” said KIwanis Club member Janet Ott. “We believe it’s important to provide books to children as literacy is so important and this is part of the Kiwanis Club’s continuing effort to help kids in our community.”
The Kiwanis Club of Coldwater also supports many projects including Coldwater Schools of Hope, Terrific Kids book distribution, Travelling Tales, The Dictionary Project, and Flags Across Coldwater. “Kids need Kiwanis, now more than ever before, and BOOKS & BUBBLES is an example of how our club is meeting a need in our community.
