MARSHALL, MI (WTVB) – Coldwater’s hopes of getting at least a share of the Interstate 8 baseball title were dashed on Tuesday as they lost at Marshall 8-7 in eight innings in the conclusion of a April 19 game that was suspended because of darkness.
Play resumed in the top of the fifth with the scored tied 6-6. After Marshall took the lead in the last of the fifth, Coldwater’s Nate Tappenden belted his second homer in a week to tie the game 7-7.
Coldwater’s defense in the bottom half of the seventh forced the game into extra innings as two Marshall runners were thrown out at the plate.
But the Cardinal defense fell apart in the last of the eighth as a pair of errors loaded the bases and a walk off single won the game for the Red Hawks.
Aiden Marsden had three hits for Coldwater while Logan Farmer had two hits.
The home doubleheader with Lakewood was cancelled. The Cardinals will play a doubleheader at Tecumseh on Wednesday afternoon in their final tuneup for Saturday’s district tournament.
The Cardinals are now 23-10 overall and they finished Interstate 8 play with a 10-4 record. Of Coldwater’s 14 conference games, six were decided by one run.
