COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The National Weather Service office in northern Indiana issued a statement on Monday which said as of 7:00 a.m. they have not confirmed any tornadoes occurred with storms that rumbled through the area on Sunday night and Monday morning.
Forecasters say they did receive two spotter reports of a tornado on the ground near Coldwater. Those reports led to tornado warnings being issued at about 10:00 p.m. and 10:15 p.m..
Both of the spotters indicated they saw power flashes, and one mentioned seeing debris flying. It was dark at the time of the reports, and that made it difficult to determine any details. But the National Weather Service stated, “despite rotation on radar at the time and a favorable environment for tornado development, we have not yet received any significant damage reports from the area or even additional verification of the tornado.”
The weather service says they will be working with Emergency Management on Monday to determine if any surveys are needed, and to identify any possible tornadoes.
Damage was reported south of Kinderhook and in the Ebyview Subdivision north of Coldwater. Trees fell onto cars and houses and there were reports of damaged barns. Severe storm damage was also reported in Fremont, Indiana.
No injuries from the storms were reported. Over 2,400 Consumers Energy customers in Branch County were without power at mid morning. Hillsdale County was hit hard by the storms as over 5,400 customers were out. That represents almost 30 percent of the customers in the county.
Over 23,000 Consumers Energy customers were without power at mid morning and it maybe late Monday afternoon before the power is fully restored.
