Pastor A. Wayne Halbleib, 93, of Coldwater, formerly of Union City, passed away Friday, June 18, 2021 at Masonville Place in Coldwater.
A celebration of Wayne’s life will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, June 29, 2021 at Burlington Church of God. A visitation will take place from 5:00 P.M.- 7:00 P.M. Monday June 28, 2021 at Lighthouse Funeral & Cremation in Union City.
Interment will follow the service at Riverside Cemetery in Tekonsha.
Wayne was born June 16, 1928 to Ernest and Eliza (Perdew) Halbleib in McNabb, IL. He graduated from Swaney-McNabb High School with the Class of 1946. Wayne attended college in Anderson, IN. On August 20, 1955 he married Barbara Norton in Marshall, MI. She preceded him in death in 1995.
Wayne was called to serve the Lord as a pastor. He was a youth minister in Mishawaka, IN in the late 50’s. He was an assistant pastor in Three Rivers, MI in the early 60’s. In 1965 he became pastor of the Burlington Church of God. He oversaw and participated in the construction of a new sanctuary for the church, which was dedicated in 1969. Later Wayne served as interim pastor for a number of churches in the surrounding area. He continued to serve the community in ministerial capacities throughout his life.
Wayne worked in construction most of his life, beginning with brick laying in college. He was an expert mason and carpenter, highly sought after for the most challenging remodel and reconstruction jobs. He also did new home construction; as well as designed and constructed industrial and agricultural buildings. He laid brick and limestone on many churches, including the Burlington Church of God.
Wayne utilized his remarkable construction skills on several work mission projects around the world, building schools, churches and radio facilities for Christians Broadcasting Hope (CBH).
Wayne enjoyed gardening, reading, traveling, and ministering to people in need. He was named the Burlington Citizen of the Year in the late 1960s. He was honored in 2008 for his work on the first Habitat for Humanity house in Union City.
He is survived by his daughters, Cheryl Nichols of Cape Coral, FL and Debra Halbleib of Canton, MI; grandchildren, Ryan Nichols of Lake Wales, FL and Suzie Starks of Cape Coral, FL; great-grandchildren Cedar Nichols, Remy and Hudson Starks; and foster sister Hazel May Giering of Pendleton, IN.
Wayne was preceded in death by his sister, Ethel Halbleib; his wife, Barbara; his mother, Eliza (Perdew) Halbleib; his father, Ernest Halbleib and his step-mother Blanche (Redshaw) Halbleib.
