COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – A Coldwater man who was charged in connection with the January 21 break in of the Smile Avenue Family and Comestic Dentistry office was ordered to serve time in the Michigan Department of Corrections Monday morning in Branch County Circuit Court.
30-year-old Johnathine Eric Handshoe was given a sentence of 23 months to 10 years after he entered a guilty plea to a charge of breaking and entering with intent.
All other charges against Handshoe were dismissed by prosecutors in exchange for the guilty plea. He was given credit for 145 days already served in the Branch County Jail.
Handshoe was charged following a Coldwater Police Department investigation.
According to court documents, the dentist office was ransacked during the break in. Items stolen included a Detroit Tigers hat, a 1968 World Series baseball, a fanny pack, candy bars, a Tigers program, a necklace and other office items.
A surveillance video showed the suspect entering the building with a plastic bag and then exiting with the same plastic bag, only larger.
Handshoe was arrested a few days later at a local gas station.
