Tony Kemp hit a walk-off sacrifice fly as the host Oakland Athletics erased a two-run deficit in the 12th inning to snap the Boston Red Sox’s eight-game winning streak with a 7-6 victory on Saturday night.
Seth Brown (3-for-5) singled off Red Sox reliever Matt Andriese (2-3) for his third RBI of the night with no outs in the home 12th to make it 6-5. Jed Lowrie doubled to plate the tying run before Sean Murphy scored from third on Kemp’s fly out to center.
Marwin Gonzalez hit a go-ahead RBI single in the visiting 12th and Kike Hernandez added an RBI single to give Boston a 6-4 lead. Oakland reliever J.P. Wendelken (1-0) earned the win despite giving up two runs on three hits in the inning.
Athletics starter Cole Irvin lasted seven innings, allowing four runs — two earned — on five hits, with two walks and five strikeouts. Frank Schwindel and Elvis Andrus each had an RBI for Oakland, which avenged a 3-2 loss to Boston in 10 innings in the series opener Friday.
Rockies 3, Cardinals 2
Trevor Story homered and singled, Ryan McMahon had two hits, and Colorado beat visiting St. Louis in Denver as Jhoulys Chacin (2-1) pitched a scoreless inning and Daniel Bard got the last three outs for his 12th save.
Tommy Edman had two doubles and Paul Goldschmidt and Yadier Molina had RBI singles for St. Louis. Cardinals third baseman Nolan Arenado received another warm reception from the fans when he came to the plate in the first inning.
The Rockies broke the scoreless game off the St. Louis bullpen in the seventh inning. Raimel Tapia reached on a one-out single, Garrett Hampson walked and Yonathan Daza reached on a fielder’s choice. Story hit the first pitch he saw from Genesis Cabrera (1-3) into the seats in left to make it 3-0. It was his 10th of the season.
Giants 6, Diamondbacks 5
Austin Slater’s two-run home run to center field in the top of the eighth inning was the difference in San Francisco’s win over Arizona in Phoenix.
Slater’s first extra-base hit since May 30 came off Diamondbacks reliever Ryan Buchter (0-2) and it traveled 463 feet. Brandon Crawford and Donovan Solano each went 3-for-4 for the Giants.
Dominic Leone (2-0) earned the win in relief. He pitched an inning, striking out two in the seventh. Jake McGee notched his 16th save by retiring the side in the ninth with one strikeout.
Rangers 7, Mariners 3
John Hicks homered twice against his former team as Texas defeated host Seattle, snapping a 13-game T-Mobile Park losing streak.
Eli White also homered for the Rangers, who have won six of their past eight games overall. Texas’ Jordan Lyles (4-5) beat the Mariners for just the second time in seven career decisions.
Kyle Seager homered for the Mariners, who lost for just the fifth time in their past 18 games. Left-hander Marco Gonzales (1-5) continued to struggle after missing five weeks because of a left forearm strain.
Dodgers 5, Nationals 3
Will Smith scored the go-ahead run and Los Angeles’ bullpen pitched five scoreless innings to outlast both Washington and the elements in a road victory.
The victory gave Los Angeles its third eight-game winning streak of the season and came after a 1-hour, 44-minute rain delay in the fifth inning. The Dodgers have not lost since four Chicago Cubs pitchers combined to throw a no-hitter against them June 24.
Dodgers starter Clayton Kershaw went four innings before the rain arrived. Brusdar Graterol (1-0) pitched a scoreless fifth inning to earn the victory in his second outing since returning from Triple-A Oklahoma City. Wander Suero (0-2) took the loss after giving up the Dodgers’ go-ahead run in the sixth.
Angels 4, Orioles 1
Familiar face Alex Cobb, who the Orioles traded to the Angels in February, came back to beat his old team, throwing 7 2/3 innings in a 4-1 victory.
Cobb (6-3) struck out six batters, walked one, and posted a 4.60 ERA in the win. He was helped in the effort by Jared Walsh’s two hits, Phil Gosselin two RBIs, and Raisel Iglesias, who earned the save.
Cobb went 7-22 over the past three seasons in Baltimore but before that he reached double digits in wins in four of the previous five seasons with the Tampa Bay Rays.
Phillies 4, Padres 2
Bryce Harper and Rhys Hoskins each had a homer and two RBIs and starting pitcher Zach Eflin held San Diego to two runs over six innings as the Phillies defeated the visiting Padres after two rain delays.
Eflin gave up three hits and two walks over six innings. The Padres had only four baserunners over the last eight innings after Manny Machado gave the Padres a quick 2-0 lead, following an infield single by Fernando Tatis Jr. with his 13th home run of the season with two out in the first. Two of those four baserunners were eliminated by double-play grounders.
Right-hander Eflin (3-6) got credit for the win, snapping a five-decision losing streak. The Phillies had been 1-7 in Eflin’s last eight starts.
Astros 3, Indians 2
Carlos Correa belted a solo homer and drove in two runs to fuel visiting Houston past Cleveland as Abraham Toro also went deep among his two hits and Jake Odorizzi (3-3) tossed six-plus strong innings.
Odorizzi extended his scoreless innings streak to 18 2/3 before Eddie Rosario crossed the plate on a fielder’s choice by Bradley Zimmer in the fourth to trim Houston’s lead to 3-1. Rosario and Harold Ramirez had back-to-back doubles to begin the seventh inning and chase Odorizzi, who allowed two runs (one earned) and four hits on a season-high 91 pitches.
Ryne Stanek entered the game and promptly struck out two of the three batters he faced to end the threat. Cristian Javier fanned two batters in a scoreless eighth inning and Ryan Pressly did the same in the ninth to secure his 14th save of the season. Rosario had two doubles and Bobby Bradley added another for the Indians, who have lost a season-high five in a row.
Tigers 11, White Sox 5
Eric Haase hit a pair of three-run home runs, leading Detroit to a home win over Chicago.
Jonathan Schoop added two hits, a homer and three RBIs for Detroit.
It was only the third time the Tigers have beaten the White Sox in the past 21 meetings.
Blue Jays 6, Rays 3
Santiago Espinal hit a two-run homer and George Springer added a solo shot as Toronto defeated visiting Tampa Bay in Buffalo.
Espinal’s first career major league homer capped a five-run sixth inning for the Blue Jays, who have won the first two games of the three-game series. Toronto right-hander Ross Stripling allowed one run on two hits and three walks in 5 2/3 innings but did not factor in the decision. He struck out five.
Manuel Margot hit a solo homer for the Rays, who have lost five consecutive games and 10 straight on the road going back to June 15. Rays left-hander Shane McClanahan (3-3) allowed three runs (two earned) on three hits and two walks while striking out five in 5 1/3 innings.
Mets 8, Yankees 3
Taijuan Walker took a no-hitter into the sixth inning as the visiting Mets put together a pair of big innings to beat the Yankees in the opener of the Subway Series.
Dominic Smith drove in three runs on three hits and Brandon Nimmo also had three hits for the Mets, who collected 14 and scored their most runs since a 14-1 win at Baltimore on June 9.
Playing their first game since allowing seven runs in the ninth inning of an 11-8 loss to the Los Angeles Angels on Wednesday, the Yankees were held to just three hits. They lost for the sixth time in seven games.
Marlins 3, Braves 2
Right fielder Garrett Cooper drove home two runs and right-hander Sandy Alcantara pitched six strong innings to help visiting Miami beat Atlanta.
Cooper was 2-for-4 and hit his seventh homer and Alcantara (5-7) allowed one unearned run on five hits, four walks and four strikeouts to earn his second win over the Braves this season.
Atlanta starter Kyle Muller (1-2) pitched 5 2/3 innings and allowed three runs on four hits, four walks and seven strikeouts in his third major league start.
Reds 3, Cubs 2
Joey Votto homered and later scored the go-ahead run in the seventh inning as Cincinnati climbed out of an early 2-0 hole to hand visiting Chicago its eighth straight loss.
Tyler Naquin also homered for the Reds, who won their third straight and improved to 6-4 on their season-long 11-game homestand. The suddenly hot Reds bullpen stymied the Cubs for a second straight game and figured prominently in Cincinnati’s third straight one-run victory.
Despite a highly efficient effort from starter Adbert Alzolay (4-8), who threw only 82 pitches over seven innings, the Cubs couldn’t snap their season-long skid. Kris Bryant hit his 16th home run of the season for Chicago.
Brewers 11, Pirates 2
Omar Narvaez had a career-high five hits, Avisail Garcia drove in five runs and Jace Peterson drove in four more to help visiting Milwaukee blast Pittsburgh for its 11th straight win.
Milwaukee starter Eric Lauer (3-3) pitched 6 1/3 innings, allowing one run and four hits, with four walks and four strikeouts.
Ben Gamel homered and Jared Oliva hit an RBI single for the Pirates, who have lost six in a row.
Royals 6, Twins 3
New Home Run Derby addition Salvador Perez knocked in an RBI double and scored on a sacrifice fly, while teammate Edward Olivares hit his first home run of the season, to pace the Royals.
Kyle Zimmer (4-0) earned the win, entering the game as the first of five Royals relievers. Scott Barlow earned the save. Griffin Jax, the first Air Force graduate to play in the majors, took the loss in his first career start.
The Royals clinched a series win after coming into the weekend on a nine-game losing streak, while the Twins were sent to their fifth consecutive loss.
