COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The Coldwater B.P.U. Board of Directors approved the renting of six acres of property at 231 North Angola Road on Wednesday night so that a local farmer can farm it.
The B.P.U. bought the land in 2011 with the intention of holding the property for future development of a water tower.
They have maintained the property while several farmers were asked if they had any interest in farming this piece of property.
Corey Post, who is a Coldwater B.P.U. employee, asked if he could farm the property which needs some work.
In addition, there are several trees that would need to come down to square up the property.
B.P.U. Director Jeff Budd says Post has offered to take the trees down on his own time in exchange for two years of free rent. Rent for the subsequent years of the lease would be $75 per tillable acre.
Budd says there are currently five acres tillable which would increase to six once the trees are removed.
He points out the agreement is subject to a 30-day waiting period and requires City Council approval so there is no special consideration being given to Post as an employee.
During the 30-day waiting period, other offers could be received.
The agreement would reduce the CBPU’s maintenance of the property, It has been forwarded to the City Council for their final approval.
