WASHINGTON DC (WKZO AM/FM) – The National Weather Service has announced a change to how they issue a Severe Thunderstorm Warning.
The NWS stated in a release that a warning will now also contain information on how intense the storm could be, varying from a Base level warning to a Destructive level.
If the NWS issues a Severe T-Storm Warning with the Destructive label on it, a Wireless Emergency Alert will be sent to smartphones in the warning area, like when an Amber Alert is sent out.
Officials with the NWS said that the new system is designed to make sure that those in the warning area are aware of how bad the storm is.
