KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — The Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s office has confirmed that one of their sheriff’s deputies who was involved in a police pursuit Saturday evening has died from injuries sustained during that operation.
Deputy Ryan Proxmire reportedly died from injuries sometime Sunday afternoon after being taken to a Kalamazoo hospital for what were called extreme critical injuries sustained after the police vehicle he was in was shot at by a suspect. More details on the original incident can be found at the link here.
Here is the statement released by the Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s office upon news of Deputy Proxmire’s death:
“It is with a heavy heart and deep regret that we announce Deputy Ryan Proxmire has succumb to his injuries. Please keep Dep. Proxmire, his family and his law enforcement family in your thoughts as we begin to grieve this tragic loss. KCSO will continue to update the community as soon as we know more details. Sheriff Fuller will be holding a press conference tomorrow afternoon. The time is still to be announced. Thank you everyone for the support that has been coming into the Sheriff’s Office for Ryan, his family, and our deputies.”
In an earlier statement, the KCSO reported that Deputy Proxmire was assigned to the road patrol but has also served Kalamazoo County residents and the Sheriff’s Office with his work in the Jail Division, even filling in as a temporary Sergeant when needed. The department called him an experienced and professional officer, saying Deputy Proxmire shared his skills with other officers in his role as a field training officer, Taser instructor, and subject control/defensive tactics instructor.
