COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – There’s no good time for a structure fire but when they happen during the holidays, it can be especially devastating. The Coldwater Fire Department has that in mind with their follow up report on the blaze early Monday at a home west of Coldwater on Airview Drive.
Fire Marshall Paul Dove says based on new information and research the cause was the spontaneous heating of a discarded wood staining material. Dove says spontaneous heating is a fire hazard that can result when using Linseed oils and other similar type wood stains and discarding the application rags or other materials into combustible or open waste paper baskets or containers.
The origin of the fire was in a mechanical room being used as a work shop. One occupant of the home suffered a minor injury in escaping the fire while a firefighter also had a minor eye injury.
