QUICY, MI (WTVB) – In boys basketball Thursday, Quincy lost at home 55-52 to Homer in the Big 8 Conference opener for both teams. Quincy battled back after trailing 18-8 at the end of the first quarter. The Orioles were down 38-34 heading into the final period when Homer was able to hold on for the 3-point victory.
Quinn Eifrid led Quincy with 20 points, while Ryan Gibson and Nathan Karney had 10 points apiece with 7 assists for Karney. The Orioles’ overall record slips to 1-2 with their next game January 7 at home against Reading.
Also in boys hoops, Bronson fell at home to New Buffalo 68-49. The loss dropped the Vikings’ record to 0-3. Branson Thenen had 13 points and 9 rebounds while Noah Roberts add 11 points. Bronson will host Coldwater on Monday. The Vikings also lost last night’s JV game to New Buffalo 46-37 with 15 points for Caleb Stayner.
In another boys junior varsity game, Union City lost 54-52 at Athens with 16 points for Ashton Duke and 14 for Blade Gordon.
In girls basketball, Bronson improved to 4-0 with a 79-41 win last night at New Buffalo. Payton Robinson and Alexa Ratkowski had 15 points apiece while Kirin Cekander added 12 points. Kiana Mayer had a team-high 10 rebounds and Kelsey Robinson had 7 steals. The Lady Vikings are off now until January 5 when they host Prairie Heights.
Thursday night in boys swimming and diving, Coldwater’s first year program competed at their second meet of the season and the Cardinals were defeated at Adrian 114-41. Top performers for Coldwater included Miguel Bauza finishing first on the 1 meter dive and second in the 500 freestyle while also swimming on the 200 medley and 400 freestyle relay teams that took second place. Also teaming up with Bauza for the relays were Jace Arnold, Javier Perez, and Austin Butler. Other second place finishes for the Cardinals came from Perez in the 50 freestyle and 100 freestyle and Butler on the 1 meter dive.
Tonight in high school sports, in boys and girls Interstate Eight Conference varsity basketball, Coldwater plays at home against Parma Western and we’ll have both games on the radio with our live coverage beginning around 5:30 p.m. following the Evening Journal. The girls tip off at 6 p.m. with the boys game scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
Also in boys and girls hoops tonight, it’s Union City at Athens while in a girls only game, Quincy hosts Homer.
Coming up Sunday, there is a fundraiser for the Coldwater and Bronson wrestling programs with the 2015 Bronson vs. Coldwater Alumni Throwdown. The meet begins at 6 p.m.at Bronson High School. Tickets are available at the high school offices or at the door for $7.00. Admission for children 10 and under is free.
