SHERWOOD, MI (WTVB) – There were two injury traffic accidents on Dunks Road in Branch County’s Sherwood Township Sunday morning that occurred less than 2 hours apart. Both were single vehicle crashes with no life threatening injuries and each one saw the vehicle run into trees.
The first accident occurred near Ladyman Road around 6:50 a.m. Sunday. Branch County Sheriff’s Deputies said 27-year old Derrick Smith of Colorado Springs, Colorado was behind the wheel of a mid-size SUV and suffered facial injuries, leading investigators to believe he wasn’t wearing a seat belt.
Smith was cited for careless driving and deputies will be seeking a warrant for charges related to violation of a controlled substance that he admitted to deputies he was using. Smith was transported to the Community Health Center of Branch County for treatment.
The second accident was reported at 8:30 a.m. on Dunks road north of Athens Road. According to deputies, a 16-year old male driving along in a Dodge Dakota pickup truck left the road and entered a ditch before hitting a tree head on. The teen was wearing seatbelts and only had minor injuries and was released to his parents after being checked out by Life Care Ambulance medics.
There was no alcohol or substances being used and didn’t contribute to causing the accident. The young driver told deputies he fell asleep.
The Sherwood Fire Department responded to both crashes.
