MARSHALL, MI (WTVB) – In high school boys basketball, Coldwater used a 24-for-28 performance from the free throw line to lift themselves to an 80-73 win at Marshall in the Interstate 8 conference opener for both teams. The Redhawks led after the first quarter 15-13, but the Cardinals outscored their opponents 22-17 in the second, 17-14 in the third, and 28-27 in the fourth to improve to 2-0 overall, 1-0 in the Interstate 8. Our McDonald’s Player of the Game, Nate Waterbury, shared team-high scoring honors with Collin Warner with 18 apiece, as both guards were a combined 18-for-20 from the charity stripe. Gage McGuire added 17, while Zach Murphy had 12. The Cardinals are off until Friday, when they host Parma Western. Marshall, which fell to 0-2 overall and 0-1 in the Interstate 8, was led by Jacob Brubaker, who scored a game-high 20 points before fouling out.
At White Pigeon, Bronson couldn’t make a 30-29 halftime lead hold as the Chiefs defeated the Vikings 67-55 in the BCS East opener for both teams. Branson Thenen had 19 points and 9 rebounds to pace Bronson, while Daniel McMichael added 12. The Vikings fall to 0-2 overall.
In high school girls basketball, Coldwater enjoyed a 13-11 lead against Marshall after the first quarter of their Interstate 8 opener. After that, offense was at a premium for the Lady Cards, as the Redhawks outscored the visitors 35-10 the rest of the way en route to a 46-23 win. Coldwater committed 12 turnovers:in the second quarter alone while being out-rebounded 45-26. Our McDonald’s Player of the game, freshman post player Tyler Scheid, had 6 points and 8 rebounds to lead the Cardinals, who drop to 1-2 overall, 0-1 in the Interstate 8. They host Homer next Tuesday. For the defending league champion Redhawks, who improve to 2-1 overall, 1-0 in the I-8, Georgianna Pratley led her team with 12 points off the bench.
There’s a full slate of wrestling on today’s schedule. Coldwater opens its season at the Columbia Central Invitational, while Bronson travels to Lansing Eastern, Quincy is at the Onsted Invitational, and Union City competes at the Concord Invitational. Also this afternoon, in boys basketball, Quincy hosts Addison.
