COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Branch County Administrator Bud Norman announced during Wednesday mornings Board of Commissioners work session that the ribbon cutting ceremony for the new Branch County Jail will take place at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, October 22.
The ribbon cutting will come almost two years after ground was broken for the new jail which was built behind the current lockup.
The construction of the new jail was made possible after a 20-year, 1.25 mill proposal was approved by Branch County voters in August 2018.
Two previous attempts to pass a new jail millage failed in 2006 and 2016.
Training will have to take place and some equipment will still have to be put in before the inmates can be moved into the new jail. If everything works out, it is hoped that will take place before Christmas.
Once the new jail becomes fully operational, the old jail will be shuttered and the process will begin for its demolition.
