COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – A cannabis provisioning center has become the fifth marijuana related business to open in the City of Coldwater.
The Dude Abides marijuana retailer opened its doors at 398 North Willowbrook Road a couple of weeks ago and a grand opening is being held this weekend.
The other marijuana and cannabis related businesses operating in the City of Coldwater are the Tree House, Lume, Sky Mint and Mint.
The Coldwater Planning Commission has approved 16 marijuana-related special land use permit requests since action was taken on the first one in November of 2020. That number includes 13 special land use permits for retail outlets. Two have been approved for growers while another was approved for a processor.
Even though these businesses are legal under state law after 56 percent of Michigan voters approved Proposal 1 in November of 2018, some have spoken out against them saying there’s to many in Coldwater.
The Coldwater Planning Commission made a pair of requests last May to the City Council to put a 90 day moratorium on any new marijuana grow facilities and retail marijuana outlets in the city’s industrial area. After a nearly one hour discussion, the Council took no action.
Those who apply for a special land use permit must follow a lengthy list of regulations under city ordinances covering marijuana establishments. They also have to go through a state licensing process.
It’s been almost a year since the city began accepting license applications for Recreational Marijuana Establishments.
