QUINCY, MI (WTVB) – The girls high school basketball season tipped off last night and the slate of games Tuesday included a county matchup in Quincy where the Coldwater Lady Cardinals defeated the host Orioles 64-24. Coldwater led 35-13 at the half and easily pulled away for the 40-point victory.
Our McDonald’s Players of the Game were freshman Malorie Rzepka for Coldwater and senior Katie Spaulding for Quincy. Rzepka had a game-high 17 points and topped the two teams on the boards as well with 9 rebounds. Also in double figures for Coldwater was Kendall Galloway with 14 points.
Spaulding paced Quincy in scoring with 11 points. The Lady Cardinal’s pressure defense helped force 36 Quincy turnovers while on the offensive end, Coldwater played unselfishly with 23 assists on 30 field goals. Game two for Coldwater is at Battle Creek Lakeview next Tuesday, when Quincy plays at Centreville.
In last night’s reserve action, in the junior varsity game, Coldwater beat Quincy 53-17 with 27 points for Samantha Rodesiler while Nadia Kiersey had a team-high 9 rebounds. Quincy doesn’t have a freshman team.
The Coldwater freshman squad opened their season at home, losing to Union City’s junior varsity 41-25. Valy Yaldo led Coldwater with 13 points.
The Union City varsity started their season on the road, losing 37-34 at Colon. Rachel Wing had a game-high 20 points in the defeat and made it a double-double with 10 rebounds. The Chargers came up short at the charity stripe where they made only 8 of their 24 free throw attempts. Union City’s next game is Monday at Bronson.
In middle school boys basketball Tuesday, Bronson’s 8th grade team lost 40-14 at Sturgis with 7 points for Graham Eley. The Bronson 7th grade team beat Mendon 27-9 Monday. Mason Harris had 8 points and Jordan Gill had 6. On Tuesday, the 7th graders lost at Sturgis 33-17. Connor Covey had 6 points, while Collin Cook and Blaine Robinson each had 4. Both teams travel to Centreville Thursday.
