NILES TOWNSHIP, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — A deputy with the Berrien County Sheriff’s office shot and killed a man wielding a knife near the Michigan-Indiana border Thursday evening. Michigan State Police officials say the incident started around 10:45 p.m. at the Franklin Woods mobile home park on S. 13th Street in Niles Township.
Authorities had received calls about a man with a knife and when they arrived, they tried to talk the man into putting it down. Deputies say the man instead ran toward them, which is when he was shot. Life-saving efforts were made, but he died at the scene.
The suspect’s name has not been released. The deputy involved is on a standard paid administrative leave while the Michigan State Police investigate the incident and the use of force that was involved.
