LANSING, MI (WTVB) – The Michigan Department of Transportation plans to spend millions upgrading I-94 between New Buffalo and Jackson, but MDOT won’t be spending much in the so-called “‘Galesburg Triangle’, where a huge chain reaction pileup occurred last January. MDOT officials say there is nothing wrong with that stretch of the highway.
MDOT Deputy Chief Engineer Brad Wieferick says January’s record breaking 193 vehicle wreck was caused by a white-out and slippery pavement and didn’t result from a problem with the design of the roadway. He says moving the cable barriers might be one option. But he adds that the desire of most local politicians to widen the highway to three lanes will not be pursued now or in the foreseeable future. According to Wieferick, there just isn’t enough traffic to make it viable.
