BATTLE CREEK, MI (WNWN/WTVB) – Albion’s former city manager has been ordered to pay over $3,600 in restitution back to the city after she entered a no contest plea to a charge of embezzlement by a public officer of over $50.
The Battle Creek Enquirer reports 47-year-old LaTonya Rufus was also placed on probation for two years during her sentencing hearing on Thursday in front of Calhoun County Circuit Court Judge Sarah Lincoln.
While the judge did not send Rufus to jail, she ordered Rufus to pay fines and costs totaling just under $2,000.
Prosecutors dismissed a second charge of embezzlement in exchange for her plea.
Rufus was placed on administrative leave in January of 2019 just three months after being appointed as the Albion City Manager.
Yet to be resolved is a civil case between the city and Rufus involving $6,500 in moving expenses.
