BATTLE CREEK , MI (WTVB) – Bronson High School’s bid for a state volleyball title continues this afternoon with the Lady Vikings taking on Traverse City St. Francis at 2 p.m. in an MHSAA semifinal match at Kellogg Arena in Battle Creek. The winner moves on to the Class C Final tomorrow at 12 noon to face either Brown City or Monroe St. Mary Catholic Central. Bronson hopes to repeat their post season success in 2009 when they won the state title while the Gladiators look to capture the crown that eluded them in 2012 when they lost in the Final to Monroe St. Mary Catholic Central, which is the defending Class C champion.
The volleyball Final Four tipped off yesterday at Kellogg Arena and included a Class D semifinal victory for nine time defending champion Battle Creek St. Philip as the Tigers defeated Plymouth Christian Academy in four games. St. Philip will face Leland in Saturday’s 10 a.m. championship match. Heading into this year’s tournament, the top 3 ranked teams in Class D, in order, were Plymouth Christian, St. Philip and Leland.
The MHSAA football semifinals are tomorrow afternoon and the 12-0 Coldwater Cardinals have a 1 p.m. game against 11-1 Chelsea at Jackson High School’s Withington Stadium. Coldwater High School’s first year swimming and diving program has produced a freshman Girl’s state finals qualifier. Jayda Kelly will be competing in the 50 yard free style today in Division 3 at Eastern Michigan University. The top 16 of the 34 qualifiers in Kelly’s event advance to Saturday’s finals.
