HOMER, MI (WTVB) – No incidents of note in Branch County yesterday on the opening day of the firearms deer hunting season, but it’s finished already for a 21-year-old hunter who accidentally shot himself in Calhoun County. Investigators say it appears the man from Homer was trying to take off his jacket in the unusually mild conditions, accidentally dropped his 12-gauge shotgun and it discharged on impact, shooting him in the chest. Apparently it missed anything vital, because first responders called it a non-life threatening wound.
The incident occurred in the 22,000 block of W Drive South in Clarendon Township about 10 a.m. yesterday morning. The victim was airlifted to Bronson Hospital in Kalamazoo for emergency surgery.
His name and condition have not been released.
