LANSING, MI (WTVB) – Deer season starts tomorrow and the Department of Natural Resources says that hunters in southern Michigan don’t have to travel far to find the best hunting in the state. The DNR says the deer population has boomed, especially in the southern tier of counties where there is more habitat and a decreasing number of hunters over the past few decades. The tradition of heading to the U.P. for the hunt may be strong with some Michiganders but the DNR says three harsh winters has decimated the herd and hunting will be difficult there.
The DNR says they expect to only sell about half a million deer licenses this year, down 40% from just a few years ago. That’s not great for the sport, but it may be for the those who still hunt. The firearms season ends November 30th.
