ANGOLA, MI (WTVB) – Two suspects are being held without bond in the Steuben County Jail after they were arrested in connection with a child abuse investigation.
The Steuben County Sheriff’s Office was notified Friday night after an injured three-year-old child had been taken to Cameron Hospital. According to a Sheriff’s Office statement, the injuries were inconsistent with the information being provided by the father, 31-year-old Derek Pierce of Kendallville, Indiana and the girlfriend, 25-year- old Dakota McHenry of Fort Wayne.
It was determined after an investigation that the injuries happened in Steuben County, at the HI-VUE campground near Lake Gage.
McHenry was arrested and is facing felonies for Neglect of a Dependent Causing Serious Bodily Injury, Domestic Battery to a child less than 14 years of age causing serious bodily injury and Obstruction of Justice.
Pierce was arrested for Neglect of a Dependent Causing Serious Bodily Injury and Obstruction of Justice.
The child was transported to Parkview Regional Medical Center in Fort Wayne and is listed in critically unstable condition.
The investigation is still ongoing.
