UNION CITY, MI (WTVB) – A high speed police pursuit that began in Branch County Sunday morning ended in Calhoun County when the car being chased smashed into a tree and the driver fled on foot through a wooded area before being taken into custody. The 24-year old suspect from Burlington is being held at the Branch County jail pending arraignment on a count of fleeing and eluding with other charges possible.
Union City police say the man was spotted speeding on M-60 near Calhoun Street about 7:20 a.m. yesterday and fled when a stop was attempted. The suspect then headed north on 8-Mile Road and later lost control near G-Drive. Authorities said speeds reached as high as 120 mph during the chase.
A Calhoun County Sheriff’s Department K-9 and Michigan State Police tracked down the driver and made the arrest shortly before 8 a.m. He managed to escape injury in the crash despite his late model Chevy Impala being totaled in the accident.
The suspect was booked at the Branch County Jail after being examined at the Community Health Center of Branch County.
