George Olah DePew, 88, of Tekonsha passed away Monday, October 25, 2021.
A funeral service for George will be held Saturday, November 6, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ Latter-day Saints in Coldwater. A private interment will be held at Ft. Custer National Cemetery.
The family will receive guests for visitation on Friday, November 5, 2021 from 5:00-8:00 p.m. at Dutcher Funeral Home in Coldwater.
George was born February 12, 1933 to Louis and Ruby (Wade) DePew in Hillsdale, MI. He married Shirley Jean on October 15, 1953 in Provo, UT, she preceded him in death on October 24, 2019.
George had proudly served his country with the United States Army-National Guard retiring after 42 years of duty achieving the rank of First Sergeant. He harbored an honorable heart that continued to serve as George had also worked as an administrator for the Veteran’s Hospital.
George is a member of the Church of Jesus Christ Latter-day Saints in Coldwater and a member of the Coldwater Ward. As a youth, George spent significant time working and staying on the farm with his grandparents, O.I. and Matilda DePew. He was active in school sports playing football, basketball and baseball.
In his younger years, George and Shirley had been a part of multiple square-dancing clubs. He held a passion for farming, animals, and wood working; but above all, he looked forward most to attending his grandchildren’s sporting events. George was social, never knowing a stranger but always a friend and was always ready with a story to share (or share again) or a memory to reminisce. He will be dearly missed as a father, grandfather, brother, and friend to many.
George leaves behind his children David (Diane) DePew of Christiania, PA, Rhonda (Donald) Hoffman of Winlock, WA, Warren DePew, Michael (Sheri) DePew both of Tekonsha; his siblings James DePew of Jackson, MI, Alice (Rich) Luther of Watervliet, MI, Ima Lee (Doug) Worden of Riga, MI, Earnie (Barb) Knight of Aiken, SC, Kitty-Rosetta (Leo) Chase of Gulf Shores, AL; 28 grandchildren; 74 great grandchildren; 16 great-great grandchildren; and his many loving nieces and nephews.
In addition to his wife Shirley, he was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Shirley Harrison, brothers H. Ron Knight, Daniel Knight, Frank Knight and his grandsons Warren DePew II and Matthew DePew.
Memorial donations are suggested to the Church of Jesus Christ Latter-day Saints.
