COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – A Branch County District Court preliminary examination for a Coldwater man who in charged in connection with the April 12 death of a bicyclist north of Kinderhook is scheduled to resume on December 1.
The preliminary exam started October 28 and there was over four hours of testimony in the case filed against 27-year-old Jacob Daniel Ward.
Among those who testified were the Michigan State Police troopers who investigated the crash.
Ward is accused of driving an S.U.V. that struck a bicycle driven by 25-year-old Era Denna Hall who was riding on Old U.S. 27 near Nye Road.
She was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. Ward has been charged with Operating While Intoxicated Causing Death, Reckless Driving Causing Death, Moving Violation Causing Death, Use of Methamphetamine and Use of Marijuana.
The defendant is being represented by attorney Tom Schaeffer who clashed with Branch County Prosecutor Zach Stempien on several points during the October 28 testimony.
At the end of the hearing, Judge Brett Weigle will decide whether the prosecution has met their burden of proof and if the case should be sent to Circuit Court for trial.
