COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – In boys high school soccer Tuesday, Coldwater advanced to the championship game of the Interstate 8 Gold Division tournament with a 1-0 win at home over Parma Western. The Cardinals’ lone goal came from Fadel Said with 27 minutes to play in the first half. Balal Nasser made 4 saves in goal as Coldwater outshot Parma 10-6. The win improved the 10th ranked Cardinals record to 15-3-2 and 7-0-1 in the Interstate 8. They will host Marshall in the Gold Division championship game Thursday after Marshall last night beat Charlotte 4-3 in overtime.
In the JV match in Coldwater, the Cardinals defeated Parma Western 2-0. Erik Corona and Harwan Alaatre scored the goals as Coldwater outshot the Panthers 12-2. Alex Shaale made two saves in goal for the Cardinals who improved their record to 17-1.
It was a busy Tuesday in cross country. the Coldwater Cardinals hosted an Interstate 8 Jamboree at the Coldwater Golf Course and in the boys meet, the Division Two ninth-ranked Cardinals finished in second place, one point behind fifth-ranked Parma Western 27-28. The Cardinals and Panthers are now tied for first place in the I-8. Shuaib Aljabaly led Coldwater finishing second. Ben Fagen was fourth, Zack Murphy fifth, Josh Evers eighth, and Jordan Parkinson ninth. Coldwater did not field a full girls team but Kathy Potter had a top 20 showing, finishing in 13th place.
In yesterday’s Big 8 Concord Jamboree, Quincy’s boys and girls teams each finished in second place while for Union City, the boys were fifth and the girls eighth. In the boys race, Nathan Nohr led Quincy with his sixth place finish while Grant Gay paced Union City by taking tenth place. For the girls, Quincy’s Gabby Porter finished sixth and Union City’s Marionna Bigelow placed 23rd. In the league standings after 3 Jamborees with one left to run, the Quincy girls remain in first place with Union City eighth while for the boys, Quincy is second and Union City fifth.
Bronson yesterday competed in a BCS Jamboree at Berrien Springs with the boys finishing third while the Girls didn’t field a full team. Colin Ransbottom led the Boys, finishing 14th while in the girls race, Meghan Vaughn placed 25th.
Last night in volleyball, in the Big 8, Quincy stayed undefeated in the league with a 3-0 victory at Reading. Mackenzie Moore had 7 kills, Jayden Haller had 5 aces and Riley Rakocy had 4 kills. The Orioles are 5-0 in the conference and 17-17-1 overall.
Union City lost 3-0 at Jonesville. Haley McIntosh had 8 kills and 8 digs and Brenna Johnson also had 8 digs. And Cassie Thorpe had 15 assists. Union City drops to 2-3 in the Big 8 and is 12-14-5 overall.
Tuesday night in girls swimming, Coldwater competed in a double dual meet at Eaton Rapids, losing 150-29 to Marshall while ending up in a 68-68 tie with Eaton Rapids. Leading the Lady Cardinals was Kory Ulrich, who recorded a personal best and school record time in the 500 Free which was good for 6 points and first place vs. Eaton Rapids and earned the team 3 points for placing third against Marshall. Ulrich also had a first place time against Eaton Rapids in the 200 individual medley and took third place vs. Marshall. Joining her with first place finishes against Eaton Rapids were Jayda Kelly in the 50 Free and Sofia Mongardi in the 100 breaststroke.
Tonight in high school sports, in volleyball, it’s Coldwater’s annual “Block Out Cancer” match, raising funds to benefit the CHC Cancer Center with the Cardinals hosting Jackson Lumen Christi. We’ll have the Interstate 8 action on the radio with our live coverage beginning at 6:15 p.m. The freshman and JV matches start at 5:15 p.m. and following those games, there will be the survivor ceremony and memorial tributes. Tonight’s event will also feature bake sale items and t-shirts for sale and again, all proceeds stay in Branch County to help fight cancer and support cancer research.
Also on the volleyball schedule, Class-C top-ranked Bronson has a BCS Quad meet at Parchment.
In middle school sports yesterday, in volleyball, the Coldwater 8th grade A and B teams and the 7th grade A team were all winners at Marshall. In the 8th grade A victory, Olivia Foley had 9 points with 7 aces and 4 digs, Carlee Crabtree had 5 kills and Jasmine Coppess had 3 assists. In the B match, Kaity Meyers led the way in serves with 19 including 11 aces. In the seventh grade action, Alyssa Bach was 7-7 at the service line while Kaia Donay was 12 for 13 with 6 aces. Laynee Paarlberg had 11 digs and Abby Herman had 3 kills.
