DETROIT, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — An annual observance of the Edmund Fitzgerald shipwreck will be held in person and live-streamed from Mariners’ Church in downtown Detroit this weekend.
The Great Lakes Memorial service begins at 3:00 p.m. Sunday. It not only recognizes those lost on the Edmund Fitzgerald but also remembers lives lost in all the roughly 6,000 shipwrecks on record in all five Great Lakes.
The service will be broadcast over YouTube for anyone who is unable to attend. Last year was the first time the service was live-streamed, and organizers say it attracted more than 1,200 viewers.
One of the most notable and tragic Great Lakes wrecks occurred on November 10, 1975 when the S.S. Edmund Fitzgerald sank during a storm with severe winds on Lake Superior. All 29 crewmen on board died in the wreck.
