COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – In boys high school soccer, the 11th ranked Coldwater Cardinals and 2nd-ranked Mattawan Wildcats played to a 2-2 tie Saturday afternoon at Coldwater. The Cardinals scored first with 16 minutes to play in the first half on a goal from Mana Ahmed, assisted by Wageeh Saeed. Mattawan tied the game with about 8 minutes to play in the half. Coldwater retook the lead 90 seconds into the second half with an unassisted goal from Fadel Said. The Wildcats then tied it up again with 26 minutes to play, and neither team was able to score after that.
Balal Nasser made 8 saves in goal for Coldwater, who improved their record to 14-3-2 on the year, staying undefeated at home this season. Two of their three losses came against Mattawan in tournaments earlier in the year, and the Cardinals haven’t lost since August 29. Coldwater will host Parma Western tomorrow in the first round of the Interstate 8 Gold Division Tournament.
In the junior varsity game Saturday in Coldwater, the Cardinals lost to Mattawan 1-0. It was the first defeat for the JV Cardinals in 32 matches, going back 2 years to October 2013. Coldwater outshot Mattawan 7-6 with 5 saves in goal for Alex Shaale as the Cardinal’s record fell to 16-1.
In volleyball, Coldwater had a 3-1 record in their own Lady Cardinal Invitational on Saturday, losing out to Dearborn Divine Child in three games in the semi-finals. Jasmine Wellet led the way for Coldwater in kills with 30, in blocks with 13, and in aces with 11. Drue Mullin had a team-high 47 digs while Jamie Wellet led in assists with 56.
In JV volleyball, Coldwater went 4-5 on the day at the Lakeview Invitational. Kaci White and Malorie Rzepka each had 22 kills, Avery Milnes had 26 assists, and Hunter Jenkot had 24 digs. And Union City had a 1-3 record in a JV tournament at Concord. Allison Adams had 14 kills, Lillian Bambacht had 6 blocks, and Alexis Liskovec had 12 assists and 7 aces.
In boys cross country, 6th-ranked Coldwater was at Saturday’s Portage Invitational and finished tenth in the field of 49 Division Two schools. Sophomore Shuaib Aljabaly set a new Coldwater High School record in Cross Country when he ran a time of 15:40.8 to earn seventh place. His performance bettered by 3.8 seconds the previous school record set by Jay Bilsborrow in 2005.
Also in cross country, Quincy, Bronson, and Union City ran at the Hudson Invitational. In Division 3 in the boys competition with 14 schools, Bronson was fifth, Quincy ninth, and Union City 12th while for the girls with 10 schools, only Quincy fielded a full team and the Orioles took second place. For the boys, Nathan Nohr paced Quincy with a ninth place finish. Colin Ransbottom led Bronson in 13th place, and Grant Gay finished 33rd for Union City. In the girls race, Quincy’s Gabby Porter finished fourth, while also medaling were Meri Michael in 13th place and Kati Spalding in 14th place. Marionna Bigelow finished 31st for Union City while Adriana Sanchez finished in 75th place for Bronson.
