COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Coldwater boys high school varsity soccer team captured a share of the Interstate Eight Conference title at home on Senior Night Tuesday, beating Charlotte 9-1. The game ended with 2:11 to play in the second half on the mercy rule. With the win, Coldwater finished the conference regular season at 6-0-1, tied with Marshall. Coldwater and Marshall played to a scoreless draw earlier in the season.
Mana Ahmed had 4 goals and one assist while Wageeh Saeed also had 4 goals. The other score was an own goal off a Charlotte defender on Azam Ahmed’s direct kick. Fadel Said also had 3 assists as the Cardinals improved to 14-3-1 on the season. Balal Nasser had 4 saves in goal as Coldwater outshot Charlotte 19-5. Coldwater hosts Division 2 second ranked Mattawan Saturday before hosting a first round Interstate Eight Gold Division tournament game Tuesday.
In last night’s JV soccer match in Coldwater, the undefeated Cardinals beat Charlotte 8-1. Nasser ZamZami had 2 goals and added 2 assists while scoring one goal apiece were Dominick Kelly, Shuaib Aljabaly, Mohamed Nagi, Mohamed Saleh, Shihab Abdulrab and Anas Asker. Coldwater outshot Charlotte 30-2 with Alex Shaale and Ahmed Abdullah sharing goal keeper duties. The victory improved the Cardinal’s JV record to 16-0.
Last night in volleyball, in a Big 8 battle at Quincy, the Orioles staged a comeback victory over county rival Union City, capturing the match in five games. Union City took the first two games 25-17, 25-20 before Quincy rallied for the win by scores of 25-17, 25-19 and 15-13. Mackenzie Moore had 28 kills and 4 aces for Quincy while Jayden Haller had 8 digs. Also, Ali Silva had 18 assists with 17 assists for Allison Parshall. The Orioles improved to 4-0 in the conference and 16-7-1 overall.
For Union City, Haley McIntosh had 11 kills, Haley Harty had 6 aces, Cassie Thorpe had 18 assists, and Emma Hoppe had 14 digs. The Chargers slip to 2-2 in the Big 8 and 12-13-5 overall.
Also in volleyball, Bronson took second place at the Gull Lake mini-tournament as the Class-C top-ranked Lady Vikings lost to Class-A Mattawan in the finals 25-20, 19-25, 12-15. Earlier, Bronson beat Gull Lake and St. Joseph, winning both matches in two games. Jill Pyles had 22 kills, Alexa Ratkowski had 50 assists, and Kiera Lasky and Kirin Cekander each had 32 digs. Bronson’s overall record is now 37-7-2.
Yesterday in cross country, Homer hosted a Big 8 Jamboree with the Quincy Girls finishing in first place with the Orioles taking second place in the Boys competition. The Union City Boys team finished sixth while the Girls placed eighth. Gabby Porter led the Quincy Girls to victory with her fourth place finish while Katie Spalding finished eighth and Meri Michael tenth. Union City freshman Marionna Bigelow finished in 27th place. On the Boys side, Nathan Nohr finished fifth and Brandon Gary sixth for Quincy while for Union City, Grant Gay took tenth place.
Yesterday in girls swimming and Diving, Coldwater had a tri-meet at Jackson High with the Lady Cardinals losing 146-38 to the host Vikings while falling to Chelsea 151-33. Coldwater had one first place finisher on the night with Jayda Kelly winning the 50 free against Jackson. Also against Jackson, earning runner-up honors were Kory Ulrich in the 500 free and Kelly in the 100 backstroke. And placing third vs. Jackson were Erica Rodgers in the 100 butterfly along with the 200 medley relay team of Kelly, Ulrich, Madison Marsh and Lina Hesselmann as well as the 400 relay team of Ulrich, Rodgers, Kelly, and Heather Nietzka. Against Chelsea, Kelly was second in the 50 free and 100 backstroke. Placing third were Ulrich in the 200 individual medley and Rodgers in the 100 butterfly and also the 200 medley relay team of Hesselmann, Kelly, Ulrich and Marsh. Coldwater’s next and first ever home meet at the Brown Aquatic Center is tomorrow night against Sturgis starting at 6 p.m.
Monday in boys tennis, the Coldwater junior varsity team wrapped up its season with a 6-2 victory at home over Bronson’s varsity squad. Winning for Coldwater were Jacob Matevia and Hernan Ochoa Polanco at third and fourth singles as well as Alec Keplinger and Blake Yates at first doubles, Dillon Gagnon and Eric Segovia at second doubles, Brendan Hanna and Joe Hicks at third doubles, and Stuart Sobeske and William Reehl at fourth doubles.
Today in high school sports, the Coldwater Girls Golf team begins state tournament play competing in the Lake Odessa Lakewood Division 3 Regional at the Centennial Acres Golf Course. And in boys tennis, it’s Bronson at Brooklyn Columbia Central.

In middle school sports yesterday, in volleyball, the Coldwater 7th and 8th grade teams hosted Charlotte. The Coldwater 8th grade A team won 21-1, 21-15. Leading the team on the serving line was Olivia Foley with 16 points 11aces, Abby Thatcher with 10 points and 4 aces, Bailey Burkhardt with 4 points and Emma Moore with 3 points. Alexa Davenport and Bailey Burkhardt each had 3 kills. In the 8th grade B action, Melissa Vozar led the way in serves with 11 while Merna Yaldo had 3 assists. And in the 7th grade victory, Mia Rzepka was 10 for 10 at the service line with 5 aces and she also led the team in kills with 6. Laynee Paarlberg also had 5 aces and a team-high 6 digs.
