COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The Centers for Disease Control said on Tuesday that the State of Michigan leads the country in the number of COVID-19 cases per population over the last seven days.
The recent surge in cases which has been driven by the Delta variant is putting a strain on hospitals and hospital systems around the state as intensive care units treating COVID-19 patients are almost bursting at the seams.
According to the latest statistics posted by the state, ProMedica Coldwater Regional Hospital had 17 COVID-19 patients with three of them in the intensive care unit which meant the hospital was at 100 percent capacity for COVID-19 cases as of this past Monday.
ProMedica’s hospital in Monroe was at 88 percent capacity with 27 COVID-19 patients and seven in I.C.U..
The situation was not as dire at Hillsdale Hospital where there was a 44 percent capacity with seven patients and two in I.C.U..
Oaklawn Hospital in Marshall was at 77 percent capacity with 16 patients and seven in intensive care.
Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo was at 81 percent capacity with 59 COVID-19 patients and 14 in I.C.U..
Hospitals around the state were at 82 percent capacity with 3,219 COVID-19 patients. A total of 698 patients were in intensive care.
The Delta variant began to show up in the middle of July and has led to the entire state being in a high risk category for the spread of the virus.
The latest statistics posted on the Branch-Hillsdale-St. Joseph Community Health Agency’s web site showed there were 43 new cases reported on Tuesday bringing the number of cases since the pandemic began in March of 2020 up to 6,466. The death toll from the virus in Branch County now stands at 114.
There maybe a glimmer of hope in the latest numbers from the state. Branch County’s positivity rate for new cases has dropped from 33 percent on November 11 to 26-point-nine percent on Monday but that is still well above the 10 percent threshold that health official want.
