BATTLE CREEK, MI (WTVB) – Calhoun County government leaders say hospitals in the county are dealing with a record surge in COVID-19 patients.
The surge in patients is impacting operations at medical care facilities. Bronson Healthcare in Battle Creek has elevated its surge status to “orange level” which allows the hospitals to better allocate staffing and supplies.
Oaklawn Hospital in Marshall has announced that elective surgeries are being cancelled until further notice so that surgery staff can assist with COVID-19 and emergency patients.
Government officials say the vast majority of COVID-19 patients are unvaccinated.
Calhoun County Administrator and Controller Kelli Scott says, “Our public health professionals urge all residents to get the COVID-19 vaccine, as it is our best tool for mitigating spread of the virus and reducing hospitalizations. And, regardless of vaccination status, public health protocols are critical right now, such as wearing a mask, not gathering in large groups, and maintaining healthy hygiene practices.”
