COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The Branch County 911 Communications Board recommended to County Commissioners on Wednesday that they go ahead and purchase the portable radios for the Enhanced 911 Project at a price of nearly $101,000.
The purchase would be contingent upon how the radios perform during testing.
Coldwater Fire Chief Dave Smaltz expressed his confidence in how the new radios would perform.
Smaltz was hesitant to have the board table the request and wait another month for the testing to take place.
With the board meeting via Zoom before they are scheduled to go back to live meetings next month, there was a humorous moment during the roll call vote when someone’s dog tried to get in on the action.
The project is designed to improve signals and communications for police, firefighters and rescue crews.
Branch County voters approved a phone surcharge in November of 2020 to help fund the $9.3 million project.
If everything goes according to plan, the new radio system is expected to be fully operational in early 2022.
