COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Tuesday in girl’s high school golf, Coldwater finished seventh out of ten teams in the Sturgis Invitational at the Klinger Lake Country Club. Coldwater had a team score of 465 while first place Portage Northern shot 388 with Sturgis second at 399. Coldwater was led by Madison Donbrock with a 103 which was good enough for a 6th place overall finish. Claire Sheppard carded a 116, Molly Smith had a 121, Gabriel Boston shot a 125, Jayla Goodwin had a 127, and Abigail Coffing rounded out the Lady Cardinal’s scoring with a 137.
Last night in volleyball, Union City picked up a pair of wins in a tri-match at home, beating Colon 2-0 and Climax Scotts 2-1. Haley Harty had 9 kills and 7 digs while Rachel Wing and Carley Robertson had 6 aces apiece. Robertson also had a team-high 17 assists. Union City improved their overall record to 5-5-and-1. In the JV matches, Union City defeated Colon but lost to Climax Scotts.
Also in volleyball, the Bronson Lady Vikings are ranked third in the state in Class C in the first coach’s poll of the season. Bronson is off to a 9-1 start after beginning their schedule with two tournament victories at home. Tomorrow, the Lady Vikings play at the Pinconning Invitational.
The second week of the Branch County high school football season kicks off a day early with reserve games tonight and the varsity action Thursday night because of the upcoming Labor Day weekend. Tonight’s junior varsity and freshman contests include Coldwater at Marshall. The games were scheduled to be played in Coldwater but were relocated with the delayed opening of Cardinal Field where installation of the new synthetic turf hasn’t yet been completely finished. Tonight’s game times at Marshall will remain the same with the freshmen playing at 4:30 and the JV at 6:30.
Also tonight, in junior varsity football, Quincy is at home against Springport while Union City is at Concord. Today in girls golf, Coldwater hosts the second Interstate Eight Jamboree of the season at the Coldwater Golf Course. In volleyball, Quincy is at Vandercook Lake while in cross country, Quincy runs at the Hillsdale Invitational.
