COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The Coldwater City Council will be asked by Public Safety Director Joe Scheid on Monday night to approve his request to update the current video surveillance system at the Coldwater Public Safety Building.
Scheid says there are four surveillance cameras in the building that were installed many years ago to allow the records clerks to see if there were any police officers available to take complaints, and they do not record.
He goes on to say in his letter to the Council that the current political climate has led to a rise in police stations and public safety employees being targeted during retaliatory violent acts.
Scheid says if they have an incident at the Public Safety Building, they have little to no video footage of the event. He points out when a brick was thrown through the lobby window earlier this year, the only video available was from a business across the street which was too distant to allow them to identify the suspects.
Lakeland Electronics has provided the lowest of three quotes of just over $30,200 which is above the budgeted allocation for this project.
But Scheid says savings from not pursuing other improvements or repairs at the Public Safety Building will offset the difference between the budgeted amount and the proposal.
