Derrell was born in Coldwater, Michigan, on July 7, 1964, to Walter & Donna (Knowlton) Sensat, Jr. Derrell was raised in Bronson, Michigan, where he attended school, graduating in 1982. After high school, Derrell enlisted in the US Navy, and was very proud of that choice, as he was a true patriot of his country.
Derrell played baseball all through school, and was an amazing pitcher. Baseball always played a large role in his life, as he was an avid Detroit Tigers fan, and coached youth baseball and softball for many years.
It was through this love of baseball that Derrell met the love of his life, Val, while he was coaching her son’s baseball team. Derrell and Val married on August 23, 2007, after being together for two years. Together they raised their children, and built an amazing life, that was always an adventure, filled with family, friends, love, and laughter.
Derrell was a devoted member of AA, and had just celebrated 34 years of sobriety on December 1, 2021.
Derrell enjoyed many things, and had many hobbies that he excelled at from bowling and fishing to cheering on the Minnesota Vikings, win or lose. Derrell loved spending time Up North at the family cabin on the river, and just exploring Michigan in general. The memories that he created with his family are something that they will always hold dear. As those who knew him could tell you, Derrell’s real passion, and love was his family.
Before Derrell met Val, he was known to go on many fishing, and snowmobile trips with his buddies. After they met, these trips didn’t hold much appeal, as they did not like to be a part. Derrell took a lot of razzing for his constant phone calls home, but that’s just who he was. Derrell was the most amazing husband, father, grandfather, and friend, and was an example to all that knew him, on how to live your life.
Derrell was preceded in death by both of his parents, as well as his grandparents. Left behind to grieve this amazing man is his wife, Val Sensat. His children, Clay (Elizabeth Harris) McKinley, Kyle (Cassidy) McKinley, Kayla (Austin Leavitt) McKinley, Carlie McKinley, Aaron Sensat, and Elisha Sensat. The Apples of their Grandpa’s Eye, Braylee & Ella Leavitt, and Isabella McKinley, as well as two more grandbabies coming in 2022, that he was over the moon excited about. Siblings, Jeff (Carri) Clugston, Mike (Julie) Sensat, Nick (Helen) Sensat, and his twin sister Sheryll (Troy) Taylor. Mother In Law, Sue Webb, Father In Law Jim Bailey, Brother In Law, Josh Roeser, and his special nephew and niece Carter & Olivia Roeser. Niece, Ashlee Mefford, and friends that are family, Eric & Sarah Johnson, Rege & Deanna Rupp, Rob & Jayne Reed, Gary & Cathy Lams, Randy & Mary Pat Kruger, Kim & Stacy Harris, CW Wilkins, Don Tigues. Along with many nieces, nephews, coworkers, and friends who thought the world of him.
It would be remiss to not mention his numerous Friends of Bill W, who I know he would encourage to keep on working the program in his memory, just as he encouraged you to do around the tables.
Memorial donations are suggested to the family. www.dutcherfh.com
