COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Members of the Branch County Sheriff’s Department told County Commissioners on Tuesday that the 2022 health insurance plan for county employees that was passed last week will cause their premiums to go up for the next year.
While the salaries are going up for union sergeants, it was pointed out by Sgt. Mike Gatke that they would have less take home pay because of the new insurance costs.
Scott Jaye from the union representing road patrol and corrections officers said his insurance would go up by nearly $4,800 in 2022.
After further discussion, Commissioners agreed to take another look at the health insurance plan.
County Administrator Bud Norman said during last Thursday’s work session that the COVID-19 pandemic and other issues caused health insurance costs to go up in 2022.
Commissioners agreed to Norman’s request to waive Board rules and take formal action during last Thursday’s work session instead of waiting for the regular meeting on Tuesday in order to accelerate the open enrollment. Norman also recommended to Commissioners they stay with the hard cap for 2022.
