COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Wednesday night in varsity boys high school soccer, it was Coldwater’s home opener and the Cardinals evened their record at 2-2 with a 3-0 shutout of Hastings in a non-conference match. Mana Ahmed scored 2 first half goals, the first just 26 seconds into the game. Wageeh Saeed had a goal and one assist while Fadel Said and Yones Mussa each had an assist. Waheeb Ahmed made 3 saves in goal, as Coldwater outshot Hastings 20-6.The Cardinals return to action Saturday at the Eaton Rapids Division 2 Invitational at the East Lansing Soccer Complex, opening play at 9:30 a.m. against Dewitt.
In yesterday’s Coldwater JV game, the Cardinals beat Hastings 8-1. Dominick Kelly, Mohsen Saleh and Shadi Alisaid had two goals apiece, while also scoring goals were Hunter Eldridge and Harwan Alaarte. Alex Schaale had two saves in goal while Coldwater outshot Hastings 21-3 and improved their record to 2-0.
Also last night in boys soccer, Quincy lost 8-0 at Marshall with the Orioles early season record slipping to 0-2.
The Coldwater high school swimming program had its first ever meet last night with the Varsity Girls team at Adrian and the host Maples defeated Coldwater 128-42. Leading the way for the visiting Lady Cardinals by placing first and scoring 6 points apiece were Kory Ulrich in the 500 yard Freestyle and Jayda Kelly in 100 yard Freestyle. Kelly also earned second place in the 200 yard individual medley and Ulrich placed third in the 100 yard Butterfly. And Erica Rogers took third place in the 100 yard Backstroke. Coldwater finished second in the 400 yard Freestyle Relay with the team of Kelly, Ulrich, Rodgers and Heather Neitzka. The same team also placed third in the 200 yard Medley Relay. Coldwater’s second meet of the season is coming up Saturday at the Kalamazoo Loy Norrix Invitational.
Wednesday in girls golf, Coldwater traveled to the Binder Park golf course for the first Interstate-8 Jamboree of the season hosted by Harper Creek and came in 5th place with a team score of 217. Parma Western finished first, shooting a 192. Leading the way for Coldwater was Madison Donbrock with a 49, Jayla Goodwin and Gabriel Boston each shot 55, Claire Sheppard carded a 58, Molly Smith fired a 62, and Micki Slack rounded out the scoring with a 73.
Today in high school sports, the reserve football season for Branch County teams kicks off including the Coldwater junior varsity and freshmen playing at Hastings. Also tonight in JV action, Quincy hosts North Adams and Union City is at White Pigeon. The varsity football season across Michigan opens tonight although most schools, including all of those in Branch County, begin play tomorrow night.
Elsewhere on today’s high school schedule, in cross country, Coldwater and Quincy run at the Adrian Invitational while Bronson is at Colon. And in volleyball, it’s Quincy at Lenawee Christian.
