Martha Jane Everest, 83, of Union City, formerly of Athens, passed away at home Friday, August 9, 2019.
A celebration of Martha’s life will be held at 10:00 AM Wednesday, August 14, 2019 at Lighthouse of Athens with Pastor John Blaskie of the Athens Congregational Church officiating.
Interment will follow at Burr Oak Cemetery in Athens. Visitation will be held from 5:00-7:00 PM on Tuesday, August 13, 2019 at Lighthouse of Athens.
Martha was born on February 15, 1936 in Battle Creek, MI to Harrie and Genevieve (Richardson) Palmiter.
As a child she moved with her family to a farm in Athens. Martha graduated from Athens High School in 1953 and later married George Harold Everest, Sr. at the family farm. She and George relocated to Florida in 1968. Martha resided in both Lehigh Acres and East Ft. Myers before moving back to Michigan in 1990.
During her career, she was employed at Oliver Tractor in Battle Creek and worked for many years in the insurance industry. Her last job was with Koyo in Ft. Custer, from which she retired.
Outside of work, Martha had many hobbies. She played softball for several years and bowled. She enjoyed sewing and quilting and made special items for family members. She was very active with the Athens Alumni Association and loved being involved in the annual banquet.
Martha was a people person who loved to kid around. Her sentimental side, golden heart and awesome personality endeared her to the family and friends she cherished.
Survivors include her children, Edward (Elizabeth) Everest of Union City, Terri (Ron) Rolfe of Battle Creek, George (Jeanie) Everest, Jr. of Battle Creek and Debbie Everest of Battle Creek; 10 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; a sister, Marie Johnson of Athens; a sister-in-law, Patricia Palmiter of Athens; and several nieces and nephews.
Martha was preceded in death by her parents; her siblings, Lester Palmiter (infant), Norm Palmiter, Phyllis Crowell, Marilyn Brunn and Elaine Stewart; and her former husband, George Everest, Sr.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations are suggested to the Athens Area Community Foundation’s Teresa M. Hewitt and Richard & Marie Johnson Scholarship Fund.
