LANSING, MI (WTVB) – After various reports of what actually took place at the BP refinery in Whiting, Indiana that resulted in a 70 to 90 cent spike in gas prices this week, several officials are demanding that the company be more forthcoming and transparent.
There were various reports of a major failure, a minor blow out, and even of a planned slowdown for routine maintenance. Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette was asked to investigate. Spokesperson Andrea Bitely says they are warning any gas stations that get caught gouging will be prosecuted. They have also sent a letter to BP, asking for more information on what actually happened at the refinery. Congressman Fred Upton of Michigan and Congresswoman Jackie Walorski of Indiana have apparently demanded similar information.
