BROOKLYN, MI (WTVB) – Matt Kenseth won the NASCAR Sprint Cup pole Friday at Michigan International Speedway for tomorrow’s Pure Michigan 400 and his Joe Gibbs Racing teammates Denny Hamlin and Carl Edwards finished second and third. Kenseth took the pole with a lap of 197.488 mph. The track qualifying record for MIS was set last August by Jeff Gordon at 206.558 mph but speeds have been lower this year. Kasey Kahne won the pole in June at MIS at 201.992 mph. Friday’s pole for Kenseth was his third this year, but he’d never won the pole at MIS.
Today at Michigan International Speedway, it’s the Camping World Truck Series Careers for Veterans 200. We’ll have the action on the radio with our live coverage on AM 1590 and FM 95.5 beginning at 12:30 this afternoon.
Our broadcast of the Pure Michigan 400 starts tomorrow afternoon at 1:30.
NASCAR announced after yesterday’s qualifying that the Chase for the Sprint Cup will be held under the original 2015 rules, meaning the track specific packages at MIS, Indianapolis, Kentucky, and Darlington won’t be used.
