COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – A Coldwater Police officer interrupted a theft in progress early Friday morning but a suspect managed to get away.
The officer was patrolling on Lott Road behind Planet Powersports at about 4:00 a.m. when a suspicious U-Haul truck was spotted parked on the side of the road.
While the officer was trying to make contact with the vehicle, what was described as a suspicious subject dressed in dark clothing took off running.
Michigan State Police troopers and a State Police K-9 unit responded to a request from the Coldwater officer for back up.
The canine unit and officers searched the area and were unable to locate the suspect.
They later discoverd that an ATV had been stolen from Planet Powersports sometime after midnight and was loaded into the rear of the UHaul.
The ATV is a 2022 Polaris RZR Pro 4, side by side, black and orange in color. It had a damaged right rear wheel and passenger side door panels. According to the State Police, multiple suspects were involved. Troopers say there was evidence that the suspects attempted to steal additional ATVs and that the intervention by the Coldwater Police Department was key in the prevention of more ATVs being stolen besides the one confirmed theft.
