COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – It’s a heat advisory Saturday for Coldwater and Branch County with a high temperature of at least 90 degrees expected for the first time in who knows when. Sultry conditions swept into the area Friday with a reminder of what summer can periodically feel like in these parts following what so far has been a cool and damp season. Yesterday’s high in Coldwater was 86 and with the humidity at 70%, the top heat index reading reached 95. The National Weather Service Heat Advisory runs today from noon to 9 p.m. Real readings are forecast to reach into the lower 90’s this afternoon and with the high humidity, the Weather Service says the combination will create a situation in which heat illnesses are possible. Heat index values will range from 100 to 110 from early this afternoon through early evening. They say drink plenty of liquid, stay in an air conditioned room if possible. Stay out of the sun and check up on relatives and neighbors. Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside and take plenty of breaks. And make sure pets have shade and plenty of water. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke and wear light weight and loose fitting clothing when possible. Those symptoms include dizziness, cramping, excessive sweating, paleness, vomiting and muscle weakness. Don’t wait until you feel thirsty to drink water. Anyone overcome by heat stroke should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat Stroke is an emergency and you are advised to call 911.
