Dorothy J. Wagar, 95, of Union City, passed away at home on Wednesday, January 26, 2022 while being cared for by her family and hospice.
A private funeral service will be held at Lighthouse Funeral & Cremation in Union City with a private interment at Newton Township Cemetery.
Dorothy was born April 14, 1926 in Jamestown, Michigan to Floyd and Frances (DeVries) Schulmeyer. She grew up and attended school in the Coldwater area. Her mother died when Dorothy was just 14 years old, which forced Dorothy to drop out of school to help provide for her family. On May 25, 1946, she married Russel B. Wagar in Angola, IN. He preceded her in death in 2012.
Dorothy was a homemaker, but she also worked for the General Telephone office from 1946-1952 and later worked for 13 years at Evans Products in Coldwater. Additionally, she was employed by Ron and Penny Baird doing landscaping work. Following retirement, she went back to Union City Adult Education, along with her husband, to obtain a GED. She graduated from Union City 1992, the same year as her grandson, Scott Wagar. Dorothy also took up piano lessons and learned to play late in life.
Dorothy was a great cook who took pleasure in hosting large holiday gatherings at her home. She liked keeping a garden and canning and freezing the produce from it. She enjoyed traveling to Northern Michigan and the family cabin near Baldwin. Dorothy was a former member of the Burlington Church of God, where she taught Sunday School. She later attended the Union City Wesleyan Church. She enjoyed participating in Bible study group. Dorothy also belonged to the VFW Auxiliary.
Dorothy is survived by her children, Gary Wagar of Nappanee, IN and Robert “Bob” (Merilee) Wagar of Sherwood; sisters Beatrice Richardson of Coldwater and Shirley (George) Racolta of Union City; grandchildren, Scott Wagar, Heather (Scott) Simington, Heidi (Tim) Alexander, Tiffanie (Brandt) Benzing, Halie Alexander and Stephanie (Cory) Lowery; great-grandchildren, Hayden Wagar, Ethan Wagar, Audrey Lepper, Zach (Michelle) Alexander, Wyatt Ketcham, Liam Benzing, Alice Benzing, Duncan Lowery, Skye Lowery, Bailery Lowery, Reygan Lowery; and great-great grandchildren Benjamin Russell Alexander and Evelyn Lowery.
In addition to her husband, Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents; her sisters, Arlene Tucker, Ruth Musselman and Louise Brandt; her daughter, Debra E. Wagar; and her granddaughter, Ashley Wagar.
