KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Winter Storm Warning for residents in the Kalamazoo area, which begins Wednesday.
The warning is currently in effect from 2 a.m. Wednesday to 11 p.m. Thursday.
Heavy snow is expected during that time period, with accumulations from 9 to 16 inches.
The affected areas include Kalamazoo, Calhoun and Jackson Counties, as well as areas as far as Lansing, according to the NWS.
Travel conditions are expected to be difficult to impossible on Wednesday and Thursday.
“This will be a prolonged period of snow,” officials stated. “It will start as rain late in the day on Tuesday, then change to snow during the early morning hours of Wednesday. The heaviest snowfall rates are expected Wednesday afternoon into early Thursday morning when it could be snowing nearly a inch an hour. It will turn very cold by Wednesday evening as temperatures fall into the teens. Wind chill may fall to near zero Wednesday night into Thursday.”
Officials say that if travel must be done during this period, drivers should keep an extra flashlight, food and water in vehicles in case of an emergency.
