FREMONT, IN (WTVB) – The roads across Branch County on Tuesday were free of drunk driving incidents being reported by local law enforcement agencies following a busy Fourth of July period for operating while impaired driver arrests. However, one neighboring county had an injury accident that police believe was alcohol related.
Steuben County, Indiana dispatch got the call about the crash that sent a Fremont man to the hospital. It happened around 5:15 p.m. on CR 700 N east of Jamestown Road. When emergency personnel arrived on scene they located a 1986 Toyota pickup truck in the south ditch against a utility pole. The driver was identified as 54-year old Jeffrey Sommers.
Deputies say Sommers was wearing a seatbelt and alcohol appears to be a factor in the crash. The area where the accident occurred is a straight part of the road at the bottom of a hill. The roadway was dry at the time of the crash. Sommers suffered cuts to his hand and face and complained of pain throughout his body. He was taken to Parkview Regional Medical Center for treatment and the accident remains under investigation.
