SALINE, MI (WTVB) – The Coldwater Lady Cardinal gymnastics team finished second Wednesday night at the South Central Gymnastics League meet hosted by Saline.
Coldwater secured their second place finish in the final league standings.
The Jackson area gymnastics team claimed the top honors with their score of 140.75 points. Coldwater tallied 132.55 points to finish with a 6-1 record in the league, losing only to the defending state champions.
“I always try to put it into perspective for our girls,” commented Coach Kim Nichols. “Our team that is composed of gymnasts only from Coldwater High School is up against several cooperative teams that combine their athletes from multiple schools onto one team. The fact that we are second behind a six team cooperative school and ahead of all of the others in our league speaks volumes of the talent of this team.” The host team Saline finished in third place. Tecumseh and Western tied for the fourth place finish, followed by Adrian and Monroe.
Coldwater had several gymnasts finish all-conference on each event, as well as earn academic all-conference honors. Ten of Coldwater‘s gymnasts earned the academic award by posting a 3.5 or higher grade point average in school. Earning the academic all-conference award were Avery Boyce, Charlotte Calhoun, Randi Dudek, Sydney Gallop, Katie Kimble, Alexa Omo, Gabby Schoch, Layla Schoch, Kiraly Schoenauer, and Jordyn Van Dongen.
Coldwater was the first team up on the uneven bars, where they had a team total of 32.125 points. Four individuals were named all-conference on the event holding, their own throughout the entire competition. Charlotte Calhoun finished in a tie for second on the event with her mark of 8.475 points. Layla Schoch earned fourth place and all-conference honors by scoring 8.1 on the event. Randi Dudek earned sixth place overall and the all-conference honor with 7.95 points. Avery Boyce claimed the 10th place finish for all-conference on the bars with her mark of 7.6.
Coldwater balanced on the beam for their second rotation and advanced three gymnasts to the podium. The team posted a total of 32.975 points on the event. Charlotte Calhoun had fourth place in the conference with the score of 8.775 points. Kaylee Slusarski came up big for the Cards with her efforts at 8.25 points. The sophomore was rewarded with an eighth place finish and all-conference honors. Joining her teammates on the podium was Kiraly Schoenauer who earned 8.125 points.
Coldwater had some ups and downs on the floor exercise, but still managed to score 33.1 points. Calhoun finished in fifth place overall with her mark of 8.75 points on the floor.
The final event for the Cardinals was the vault where they finished strong, tallying their highest event score of the evening, at 34.35 points. Avery Boyce performed a nearly flawless vault to earn a personal record score of 8.7 to lead the Cardinals. The mark was good enough to finish all-conference with a tie for sixth place for the senior. A three-way tie for ninth place at 8.55 points put three more Cardinals on the podium: Randi Dudek, Charlotte Calhoun, and Kiraly Schoenauer each shared the honor in the league. It was a personal best for Schoenauer and a season best for Dudek.
In the all-around competition Coldwater had three young ladies earn all conference honors. Charlotte Calhoun finished in fourth overall in the SCGL with her total score of 34.55 points. Kiraly Schoenauer tallied 32.325 points to claim the sixth place finish in the conference. Avery Boyce joined her teammates, finishing in 10th for all-conference honors in the league with her four event total of 31.4 points.
“I’m especially proud that we had six individuals earn all conference honors in all of the events at the meet. It just shows you how much depth this team truly has and that is a team effort out there” noted Nichols.
Coldwater has a dual meet in Angola, Indiana, on Monday evening for the annual “Battle of the Border”. The competition begins at 6:00 p.m. in the old high school.
