OVID TOWNSHIP, MI (WTVB) – Two passengers in a single-vehicle crash in southern Branch County just before noon Sunday were flown by helicopter to Bronson Hospital in Kalamazoo in serious condition.
The crash happened on Angola Road just north of Central Road at 1145 a.m.
The Branch County Sheriff’s Department says 22-year-old Breanna Marshall of Coldwater and her two passengers, a 19 year old female and a seven-year-old boy, were trapped in the wreckage when deputies arrived on the scene.
Deputies assisted the occupants and requested the Jaws of Life to the scene. The Lakeland and Coldwater Fire Departments worked together to free all three occupants from the wreckage after about 30 minutes.
Life Care ambulance then treated and transported all three occupants to ProMedica Coldwater Regional Hospital.
The 19 year old and the seven year old were later flown out by helicopter to Bronson Hospital.
According to a Sheriff’s Department investigation, Marshall was driving north on Angola Road when she ran off the road and hit a deep culvert head on. The impact caused significant damage and resulted in the occupants being trapped.
The occupants were not wearing seat belts. Air bags were deployed.
According to the Sheriff’s Department, the preliminary cause of the accident is cell phone use. Neither alcohol nor substances were a factor in this accident which remains under investigation by Branch County Sheriff Deputies.
They were assisted at the scene by Life Care Ambulance, and Lakeland and Coldwater Fire Departments with the Jaws of Life.
