HOLLAND, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – A Grand Rapids television station is reporting that authorities say the driver in a crash that left three children dead in Holland Township wss suspected of being under the influence of narcotics.
The information comes as part of a Freedom of Information Act filed by WXMI Fox 17.
The accident happened around 11:00 a.m. February 17 when an SUV driven by a 30-year-old woman crashed into a retention pond which was 3-4 feet deep. The mother was able to escape. When deputies arrived on scene, they found her frantically trying to get the kids out of the car.
Ottawa County Sheriff’s Department deputies and firefighters worked to get the children out of the vehicle. Two of the children died later that day at the hospital. A third died the next day.
According to the TV station, police are investigating what caused the mother to leave the road and crash. The police report states “driver is suspected to be driving under the influence of narcotics. A blood draw was completed and results are pending.”
The Sheriff’s Office noted in a press release that all three children were wearing child approved safety seats at the time of the crash.
The youngsters’ aunt had set up a GoFundMe effort to raise money for the family.
