LANSING, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — The Michigan House on Wednesday, March 9, approved a cost-saving plan for motorists that would suspend payment of the state’s 27-cent per gallon gas and diesel fuel tax for six months.
Under House Bill 5570, the gas tax pause would remove Michigan’s 27 cents per gallon fuel tax until the end of the state’s current fiscal year.
Republicans are supporting the measure, and say that the bill would save Michigan drivers an estimated $750 million dollars over the period, in their opinion a much bigger savings than the proposed pause of the smaller federal fuel tax of 18.4 cents per gallon.
But not everybody is on board with the proposal.
Michigan House Democrats stating that the move would starve the state of $725 million dollars needed for repairing Michigan’s roads along with costing the state thousands of trade jobs and putting the brakes on hundreds of road repair projects.
With the resolution adopted by the Michigan House, the bill will now advance to the Michigan Senate for further consideration.
